Remembering Bill Simon: The Heart Behind Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers

The Freddy’s family and the broader restaurant community are mourning the loss of a visionary leader, devoted family man, and compassionate soul—Bill Simon, Co-Founder, President, and CEO of Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers. Bill passed away after a courageous battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy that stretches far beyond the walls of the restaurants he helped build.

As we reflect on his life, our thoughts are with his beloved wife Sally, their five adult children, and his cherished grandson. We also extend our deepest sympathies to his parents, Frederick L. and Norma Jean Simon, his three brothers, and his sister. Bill was more than a successful entrepreneur—he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend. His warmth, generosity, and unwavering faith touched everyone who knew him.

A Life Rooted in Family and Faith

Bill Simon’s life was anchored in two enduring pillars: his family and his Catholic faith. He was deeply passionate about both, and they guided his decisions, shaped his values, and inspired his leadership. Whether he was spending time with loved ones or mentoring team members at Freddy’s, Bill’s compassion and integrity were always evident.

He credited much of his personal and professional success to his father, Freddy Simon, a World War II veteran whose strength and character left a lasting impression. Freddy instilled in Bill a love for entrepreneurship early on. As a young boy, Bill mowed lawns and sold landscaping fixtures—small ventures that planted the seeds for a lifetime of business innovation.

From Kansas Roots to National Impact

Bill’s journey began in Kansas, where he earned an accounting degree from Kansas State University. After graduation, he returned to Wichita and joined a national CPA firm, laying the foundation for a career that would span industries and impact countless lives.

His passion for the restaurant world emerged during his tenure as Vice President of Finance for a Pizza Hut franchisee. It was here that Bill discovered the unique blend of hospitality, operations, and community engagement that would later define Freddy’s. His success in this role propelled him into leadership at the Rent-A-Center franchise group, where he became a partner and helped oversee the sale of 120 stores to the franchisor—a major milestone in his career.

But Bill’s ambitions extended beyond profit margins. He took on the role of interim president at Center Industries, a branch of the Cerebral Palsy Research Foundation in Wichita. This organization, dedicated to providing employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities, aligned perfectly with Bill’s values. He later served on the board of the Cerebral Palsy Research Foundation and contributed to the Wichita State University Center for Entrepreneurship, offering his time, expertise, and resources to causes close to his heart.

The Birth of Freddy’s: A Family Legacy

In 2002, Bill, his brother Randy, and their father Freddy teamed up with friend and restaurateur Scott Redler to launch Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers. What began as a single 2,400-square-foot restaurant in Wichita quickly blossomed into a nationwide phenomenon.

Bill was instrumental in shaping Freddy’s culture from day one. He envisioned a place where quality food, warm hospitality, and timeless values came together. Under his leadership, Freddy’s grew into a beloved brand with hundreds of locations across the country. But for Bill, success wasn’t measured in store counts—it was measured in smiles, relationships, and the sense of family that permeated every Freddy’s location.

He led by example, inspiring team members to strive for excellence while never losing sight of kindness and humility. Bill’s vision was clear: Freddy’s wasn’t just a restaurant—it was a place where people felt welcome, valued, and connected.

A Legacy of Leadership and Service

Bill Simon’s impact extended far beyond the boardroom. He was a mentor, a philanthropist, and a tireless advocate for community development. His involvement with charitable organizations reflected his belief that business should be a force for good. Whether supporting local initiatives or national causes, Bill gave generously of his time and resources.

His work with the Cerebral Palsy Research Foundation and Wichita State University’s Center for Entrepreneurship showcased his commitment to empowering others. He believed in lifting people up, creating opportunities, and fostering innovation. His leadership style was marked by empathy, vision, and a deep respect for every individual.

Remembering the Man Behind the Brand

To those who knew him, Bill Simon was more than a CEO—he was a guiding light. His colleagues admired his strategic mind, his unwavering ethics, and his ability to make everyone feel like family. His friends cherished his warmth, humor, and loyalty. And his family knew him as a man of deep love, faith, and devotion.

Bill’s passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his legacy lives on in every Freddy’s restaurant, every team member he mentored, and every life he touched. His story is a testament to the power of vision, the importance of values, and the enduring strength of family.
